Allergy skin testing

Allergy skin testing is performed for inhalant allergens and foods. The standard regimen involves skin testing using a painless (no needles) rapid method. Using a multitest applicator, allergy extracts for an appropriate number of allergens are placed on the patient's arms or back. If the patient is allergic, reactions in the form of hives (redness and swelling) begin immediately. These hives can cause temporary itching which typically resolves in a short period of time.

Results from the skin test are available in 20 minutes. Infants, children and adults can be comfortably and reliably tested.

The best time for allergy testing

You do not need to be experiencing any allergy symptoms at the time of your visit to be evaluated for allergies. Our skin testing methods will accurately determine what allergens cause your allergy symptoms even if you are not experiencing the symptoms.

In fact, if you are a seasonal allergy sufferer, it is wise to get your immunotherapy treatment started 3 to 6 months before your difficult time of year. This way, the immunotherapy will have started to protect you when the allergy season begins.

Preparing for allergy testing

To make certain that you/your child can be allergy skin tested at your/your child's visit to Allergy & Asthma Specialists, do not take any antihistamines 10 days prior to your appointment. Antihistamines block the skin testing results and the physician will not be able to determine how best to treat you. Antihistamine medications include Allegra, Claritin, Clarinex, Zyrtec, Alavert, Loratadine, Phenergan, and Atarax. Astelin and Astepro, nose sprays containing antihistamines, must also be stopped 10 days prior to testing. Some over-the-counter medications such as Benadryl and allergy/cold/sinus medications can be taken up to 3 days before your allergy testing. At your visit, the physician will assess if any of the above medications, if taken, will interfere with skin testing. If it is determined that skin testing results will not be accurate, you will need to reschedule your appointment.
